An Emirates A380 operating EK 413 from Sydney to Dubai experienced an engine failure 20 minutes after departing Sydney, bound for Dubai on Sunday evening Australian time.

Passengers reported hearing loud bangs and seeing sparks and flames from the number 3 engine on the starboard (right) side of the aircraft. The aircraft returned to Sydney and landed after dumping fuel en-route to the airport.

Emirates A380 aircraft use the Engine Alliance GP7200 engines, and this is the second engine shut-down incident for the airline in as many days - with a JFK-bound A380 diverting to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris after shutting down an engine on Saturday.

Worthy of note is that the engine that catastrophically failed in the Qantas A380 was a Rolls Royce engine. Perhaps his string of events for the A380 is a statistical run with no correlation between two engine manufacturers? Or perhaps it is a reflection on the scale of the engine (any manufacturer) required to empower an aircraft the size of the A380? Time (and more statistics) will tell.
