A Lancair IV-P has crashed in San Diego, killing a prominent Arizona businessman, his wife and daughter.
Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft "spinning" before impacting terrain.
The Lancair is a very popular and proven kit aircraft, built since 1993 with around 360 aircraft produced. Lancair aircraft are offered as a kit for owners to construct - this places the aircraft in the FAA "Experimental Category", however, it should not be construed that the design is experimental per se.
Many Lancair accidents are attributable to handling errors associated with high performance and low experience of pilots.
