Thursday 20th June 2013:
A Russian-built MI-17 operated by the Nicaraguan Army has crashed on operations near the Momotombo Volcano around 10:30 am local time.
It is reported that the helicopter experienced “mechanical problems” at altitude before descending uncontrolled into terrain adjacent to a lake en-route to the military base at La Paz Centro – a journey of around 15 km to the SW.
Most of the wreckage entered the water where it subsequently submerged. One body has been located and (according to some sources) other body parts have been sighted floating in the lake.
Army divers are on site, and the Army will issue detailed information in due course.
